Chutney

8 products in collection

The origin of the word seems to originate from Hindi, loosely meaning to lick or eat with appetite.

Chutney as a condiment has its origins in India as far back, it is believed, as 500BC, and has different names in the various languages of the country, with slightly different meanings, such as fresh and pickled preparations, as served as appetisers with poppadom’s in Asian restaurants today.

It is used to complement curries and a good many other preparations like being spread on chapatis etc.

The term Anglo-Indian cuisine was developed during the period of the British Raj in India. It is where we get the anglicised version of chutneys today, developed by the Memsahibs, the wives of soldiers, administrators, and merchants who came to India with culinary skills, their cookbooks, and seeds of their favourite orchard fruits, such as plums and damsons to name a few. It is the longest-standing fusion cuisine in the UK and possibly the world.

Indian influence was spread throughout the British Empire leaving distinct flavours in terms of chutneys in South Africa and in the Caribbean, where it has given rise to a type of fusion music.

Chutney even gave its name to a movie in 2010 in which the storyline is sweet and spicy, just like it namesake.
