Grantham Ginger Snap | Orange & Ginger Marmalade

Marmalade | Out of stock |

Ginger arrived in the UK in the late 10th century, and was well known by the 11th century. It was used for both medicinal and flavouring purposes and was probably bought here by returning Knights from the crusades.

Grantham is a market town that benefited from trade that travelled The Great North Road. Because of this, Ginger and other imported fruits and spices would have been seen early on. It was not until William Eggleston set up a bakery and shop in the town in 1740 that they started to produce spiced breads, which were in vogue at the time. We have to thank him for Grantham’s fame as he single-handedly promoted his ginger bread and biscuits throughout the land. It is said that he came upon the recipe by accident. A joyful accident for all those ginger lovers. We “doff our cap” for the inspiration he provided us, to produce our own tribute to Grantham’s ginger history.

This tradition was resurrected in the town by Alastair Hawken of Hawkens Gingerbread in 2009. His recipe is exactly the same as the original.
